A team of experts from MIT, the University of Colorado and elsewhere discovered the invisible shield approximately 7,200 miles above the Earth. The barrier blocks dangerous ultrarelativistic electrons from bombarding the planet by allowing them to get no closer than 11,000 kilometers from the Earth’s surface.

A densely packed star-forming galaxy is reproducing the events that brought light to the early universe. The nearby compact galaxy named J0921+4509, which is rapidly producing stars, has many of the characteristics that would have been required to light up the early universe. Located approximately 3 billion light-years from the Milky Way, the star-forming regions of the tightly bound galaxy are surrounded by dense clouds of gas. Holes in the gas allow radiation to leak out, mimicking events that would have broken through the darkness that followed the birth of the universe.

Astrophysicists using computer simulations show the evolution of the universe like never before. Simulations model the large scale changes in the structure of the universe over 13.5 billion years. The computer model that performs these animations Illustris used 8,000+ computers over a period of six months to render the video at the link. The designers incorporated physical models along with Hubble images to create a remarkable visualization.

A team led by astronomers at The Australian National University has discovered the oldest known star in the Universe, which formed shortly after the Big Bang 13.7 billion years ago. The discovery has allowed astronomers for the first time to study the chemistry of the first stars, giving scientists a clearer idea of what the Universe was like in its infancy. "This is the first time that we've been able to unambiguously say that we've found the chemical fingerprint of a first star," said lead researcher, Dr Stefan Keller of the ANU Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics.

The nature of gravity is that all masses are growing in space. It is an underlying energy in the cosmos that causes this. JE
- Gravity acting across vast distances does not seem to explain what astronomers see.
- Galaxies, for example, should fly apart; some other mass must be there holding them together. - Astrophysicists have thus postulated "dark matter" - invisible to us but clearly acting on galactic scales.
- At the greatest distances, the Universe's expansion is accelerating - Thus we have also "dark energy" which acts to drive the expansion, in opposition to gravity. - The current theory holds that 68% of the Universe is dark energy, 27% is dark matter, and just 5% the kind of matter we know well.

I'm quite sure that the universe isn't infinite, simply because time and space are creations of God for this cosmos.
Also, i wonder whether the conclusion that the universe is flat has to do with the fact that the map was measured out from one point in space. In the past people thought that the earth was flat because they measured out from one point. JE (talk) 02:25, 13 January 2014 (PST)--
At this point you’re probably wondering what we can do with a 99%-accurate map of the nearby universe (yes, this isn’t a map of the entire universe — 1.2 million galaxies is just a tiny sliver). Will it be used by NASA to plot its first intergalactic mission? No (but it’s nice to dream). A highly accurate galactic ruler and map is useful for one main reason: It tells us a lot about how the universe actually functions. If you have an accurate galactic ruler, it then becomes fairly easy to work out whether the universe is flat or curved, and whether the universe is static, expanding, or contracting. Black hole mergers are a rare event to observe and only a few candidates have been found. Some black hole merger candidates have been identified, but this example is the most distant discovered to date. There’s only one way this extreme cosmic dance will end — both black holes will eventually spiral together, losing energy and momentum to gravitational waves rippling from their spacetime warping, collide and merge to form an even bigger black hole.
