For pre-sowing in pots i use lava grit to cover the seeds. Above the seed a layer of lava grit of about twice the thickness of the size of the seeds. Using lava grit makes it easier to control the delicate process of pre-sowing. It protects against drying out and it's easier to know how thick the layer is above the seeds. It also keeps the seeds at their place when watering the pots. Diameter of the top of the pot shown here is about 4 inches.
