Monarda didyma |
Monarda didyma is also known as bergamot and beebalm. It is native to eastern North America. The name bergamot was given because its odor is similar to that of the bergamot orange (Bergamot orange is the source of bergamot essential oil which is used to flavor Earl Grey tea).
It is a perennial plant that flowers from mid- to late summer. Beebalm has a long history of use as a medicinal plant by many Native Americans. The plant has strong antiseptic properties and can be used against infections and minor wounds. Tea from the plant was used to treat mouth and throat infections and dental caries. Beebalm is the natural source of the antiseptic thymol, an important ingredient in modern mouthwash formulas.
